On April 5th, the Jeanne Sauvé Foundation hosted its first public film screening – In Pursuit of Peace – before an audience of Sauvé Fellows, staff, Board members, Senior Advisors, and several members of the Montreal community.
Directed by Garry Beitel and produced by Barry Lazar, In Pursuit of Peace tells the little known stories of Canadians on the front lines of international peace initiatives in South Sudan, Turkey, Congo (DRC) and Northern Iraq. The film goes behind the battle lines to show the challenges of peacemaking work. This feature documentary explores the impact that violence has had on the lives of those directly affected by armed conflict while making a case for unarmed civilian peacemaking and meditation as a response to civil war.
The film highlights the work of Andrew Marshall (a mediator of armed conflicts), Tiffany Easthom (Country Director for Nonviolent Peaceforce in South Sudan), Kai Brand-Jacobsen (a peace worker and founder of the Peace Action, Training and Research Institute of Romania), Oumar Sylla (Chief Technical Advisor for UN Habitat in Eastern Congo) and features the stories of armed conflict survivors, as they try to find peace and reconciliation. In Pursuit of Peace follows its protagonists as they share their challenges and their hopes as they work to create alternative responses to war and violence.
After the screening at Sauvé House, audience members were encouraged to ask Montreal-based documentary filmmaker Garry Beitel, and journalist and documentary producer Barry Lazar, questions about the film’s creative process, international peacekeeping initiatives, the complexities of war on the ground, etc. After a riveting discussion, the audience left feeling inspired and connected to the documentary’s mission and humanism.
Conflict isn’t the issue, it’s violence. Part of our role as global citizens is to reduce violence in the world. – Garry Beitel
The Foundation would like to thank reFrame Films once again for sharing its film with the Sauvé community, as part of the Jeanne Sauvé Forum. We look forward to hosting more public film screenings in the future!
