Manish Thapa

Manish is a Resident Professor of International Peace Studies and Head of Department of Peace & Conflict Studies at the United Nations-mandated University for Peace (UPEACE) in Costa Rica. He is Visiting Professor at Institute of International Relations (IIR) at University of Warsaw. In 2016, Manish launched his own website, featuring online courses on peace studies and international relations.

Manish was previously an Associate Professor of Peace Studies & International Relations in the Department of Conflict, Peace & Development Studies, at Tribhuvan University (Nepal) and Visiting Professor at Shinawatra University (Thailand), Uppsala University (Sweden) and University of Notre Dame (United States).

In 2014, Routledge published India in the Contemporary World: Polity, Economy and International Relations which Manish co-edited. Manish has written extensively on subjects related to peace building and to social and development issues in Nepal, and has published numerous books, journal articles and book chapters with leading publishers and journals. In 2015, Manish published another edited book: Internal Conflicts & Peacebuilding Challenges. In 2005, Manish founded the Nepal Peace Initiative Alliance, which was instrumental in the establishment of the Ministry of Peace & Reconstruction in Nepal.

Manish received his PhD in International Relations from the University of Warsaw (Poland), his Doctoral Degree in International Relations from University of Tokyo (Japan) and Masters Degree in Peace & Conflict Studies from European Peace University (Austria). He is a recipient of the prestigious Robert McNamara Fellowship (2009-2010) from the World Bank and the RONPAKU Fellowship (2008-2011) from the Japan Society for Promotion of Sciences (JSPS).

Manish was a Brown International Advanced Research Institute Fellow at Brown University (2011), McGill–Echenberg Human Rights Fellow at McGill University (2010), Kroc Visiting Research Fellow at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame, USA (2008-2009). He was a founding Executive Director of the Asian Study Centre for Peace & Conflict Transformation (ASPECT). Manish received his Bachelors degree in Development Studies from Kathmandu University.

He serves on the Board of Directors of Global College of Management, Uniglobe College, Global College International, Uniglobe Higher Secondary School and Valley View School. He is co-chair of the Internal Conflicts Commission at the International Peace Research Association (IPRA) and Council Member of the Asia-Pacific Peace Research Association (APPRA).

Manish worked with his mentor, Prof. T. V. Paul, James McGill Professor in International Relations, to develop the South Asian Regional Cooperation Academic Network (SARCAN), a joint project between the McGill University Joint Research Group in International Security (REGIS) and the Canada and Asian Study Centre for Political & Conflict Transformation (ASPECT) Nepal.

Manish was also  the publisher – and with Gilli Stern was responsible for the design and layout – of “Reflections, Sauvé Scholars 2006-2007”, the collection of the cohort’s scholarly works and personal accounts of their experiences as Sauvé Scholars.

In May 2015, Manish returned to Sauvé House to participate in Sauvé Encore! 2015, as part of the Foundation’s alumni outreach program.
